  • Embedded multimedia or advanced telematics systems: 1 to 10 GB/month
  • Remote maintenance with heavy data transfer: 5 to 50 GB/month

Conclusion

The overall average for traditional M2M subscriptions (excluding video) is often between 10 and 500 MB per month, while more advanced uses can exceed 3 TB.

Data consumption from 20 GB to +500 GB

M2M subscriptions are crucial for these data-intensive applications, and their importance is growing with the demand for connected solutions. Infrastructures capable of handling this massive data transfer are essential.

Here are some typical cases where consumption can reach the highest levels:

Connected Video Surveillance (4G/5G IP Cameras)

  • Continuous Transmission: HD or 4K video streams.

Data consumption from 1000 GB to +9 TB

Yes, it is possible, but it is very rare and limited to very specific uses. M2M subscriptions exceeding 1,000 GB (1 TB) mainly exist in contexts where the cellular network is used to transport streaming video or massive amounts of data.

Here are a few examples:

24/7 video surveillance in very high definition (4K or 8K)

  • A single uncompressed 4K camera can consume several hundred GB per day.
  • A fleet of cameras connected via 4G/5G can easily exceed 1 TB per month.

Connected vehicles or multimedia fleets

  • Downloading maps, software updates, telemetry, and onboard streaming.
  • Some advanced systems can reach 1 to 2 TB per month.

Digital signage or advertising terminals

  • Frequent streaming of HD/4K videos via the cellular network.
  • Possible consumption: 1 to 3 TB per month depending on the frequency of updates.

Industrial sites or remote construction sites using 4G/5G as their primary Internet connection

  • When the M2M SIM card is used as a backup or primary connection, consumption can exceed several TB per month, equivalent to typical Internet usage.

Conclusion

Yes, some M2M applications exceed 1,000 GB per month, but this mainly concerns intensive video use or full site connectivity, and not standard M2M uses such as sensors, telemetry, or electronic payment terminals (EPTs), etc.

Data consumption from 20 TB to +500 TB

A subscription consuming 500 TB per month represents absolutely extraordinary usage.

At this level, we are no longer talking about simple data exchanges between sensors, but rather massive and continuous flows, often video and scientific, transmitted via cellular networks, 4G, 5G, etc.

Here are the few areas where such monthly consumption could be realistic:

Continuous 4K/8K video streaming (mobile broadcast or surveillance)

  • 4K/8K security cameras connected via 5G, streaming 24/7 to a control center.
  • Mobile television units or film cameras sending uncompressed video streams.
  • A single uncompressed 8K camera can generate more than 100 TB per week, so 500 TB/month is plausible.

Autonomous vehicles or industrial drones

  • Autonomous vehicles (trucks, taxis, ships) transmitting real-time camera, LIDAR, radar, and telemetry data to analysis servers.
  • These systems can generate several hundred TB per month if data is sent without local filtering.

Defense, security, and intelligence

  • Aerial or maritime surveillance systems (military drones, reconnaissance aircraft, connected submarines).
  • Continuous transmission of video, infrared, and multiple sensor streams at very high resolution.

Data-intensive scientific research

  • Space, meteorological, or ocean observation stations sending raw data in real time.
  • Physics or astronomy research projects (e.g., connected telescopes, particle sensors).

Remote simulation and augmented reality

  • Augmented or virtual reality applications broadcasting 3D environments in real time via 5G.
  • Used in military training, telesurgery, or immersive industrial maintenance.

Conclusion

An M2M card consuming 500 TB per month can only exist in extreme environments where ultra-high-definition video, massive telemetry, or scientific research require continuous, uncompressed data transmission.

Information about SIM cards & routers/boxes

Below are some frequently asked questions about their use.

I have high data usage. What are the possible reasons for this ?

There are several causes related to device configuration that can lead to high data consumption. Some of these are mentioned in this article.

1. Retransmission due to poor connection quality
Applications, such as those using the FTP protocol, may interrupt data transmission in the event of a poor connection and attempt to retransmit the packets in their entirety. This can lead to a significant increase in data consumption. Make sure that the transmission signal is strong enough.

2. Frequent pings and NTP requests
There are several reasons why pings may be sent from the device. For example, Keep-Alive pings can be used to signal to a server that a device is still reachable. We recommend configuring a ping approximately every 5 minutes to ensure that closed Internet sessions are correctly recognized by the device. If this ping is performed more frequently, data consumption may increase significantly. For example, a ping every minute would result in consumption of approximately 1.5 MB per day, with 56 bytes per ping. The same applies to requests to time servers via NTP. We advise you not to make these requests more than once a day if the device is in continuous operation.

3. MTU size
We generally recommend setting the MTU (maximum transmission unit) size to 1400, as this is the value that gives the best results internationally. The MTU size determines the size of data packets during transmission. Each data packet contains additional information, such as the IP address of the sender and recipient or the packet number. The smaller the packet size, the more frequently this additional information is sent. Increasing the MTU size can therefore reduce data consumption.

4. Retransmissions due to transmission errors
In the TCP data processing protocol, a checksum is included with each data packet, which is verified upon arrival. If this checksum no longer matches due to transmission errors, the packet must be resent. Try to analyze where the transmission errors are occurring to avoid these retransmissions.

Ma consommation de données est élevée. Quelles peuvent en être les raisons ?

There are several reasons why devices may fail to establish an Internet connection with a HIVEGLOBAL SIM card. These are summarized below.

1. Data roaming is not enabled
HIVEGLOBAL M2M SIM cards are active only in roaming mode, without a home network. This means that these cards exchange data both nationally and internationally via roaming. It is therefore essential that the roaming option is enabled on your device. Please check that this is the case. Enable this option if it is disabled.

2. The access point (APN) is not configured
Use of the agreed networks can only be guaranteed if the correct APN is configured. By default, some networks may work without an APN configured, but we cannot guarantee this functionality. Therefore, check that the correct APN is set if you are experiencing connection problems.

3. SIM card inserted incorrectly
Due to the different shapes and types of SIM card slots, there are several possible sources of error when inserting the card. In some slots, it is possible to insert the SIM card upside down. In addition, Nano SIM cards are thinner and may be inserted incorrectly or not fit properly in the slot. Some devices have a space between the slot and the case where the SIM card can be inserted by mistake. Please check carefully that the SIM card is inserted correctly.

4. Device out of coverage or no network coverage
Please make sure you are in an area covered by your subscription plan. If you are in a country for which you do not have a subscription, your device will not be able to connect to available networks. If you find that your current coverage is not sufficient for your needs, contact your sales representative for information on adjustment options. Also, make sure there is sufficient network signal at the location of the device's antenna. The signal may be particularly weak in basements, behind steel beams, or in particularly humid locations.

5. The network cell is (temporarily) overloaded
If you experience connection drops at specific times, such as every day at noon, this may be due to local overload of certain network cells. A classic example is a business park where many employees start browsing the mobile network at lunchtime. This can create congestion on the local network. In such cases, try to determine the causes and, if necessary, configure the device to switch networks.

6. Insufficient power supply
Modems may have different voltage (volts) and current (amps) requirements depending on the mobile phone standards used (e.g., 2G, 3G, 4G). In addition, USB ports often vary in terms of available power (and sometimes depend on processor load, especially on laptops).

Please ensure that you comply with the device specifications and that the power supply remains stable.

7. The antenna is poorly connected or disconnected
Many devices use external antennas or allow external antennas to be added. We always recommend using external antennas, if possible. If you experience intermittent or lost Internet connection, check that the antennas are properly connected and that no cables are loose. External antenna cables are often assembled manually and can become detached from the connection points.

8 Failure of a roaming provider or network operator
In some cases, there may be failures at roaming operators, certain network providers, or specific network cells. In the event of known issues, we immediately notify the affected customers. However, our monitoring system may not detect minor local outages. If you have ruled out other causes, please contact our support team.

9. Faulty SIM card
In very rare cases (less than 1 in 10,000), the SIM card may be damaged due to a manufacturing defect.

In addition, physical damage (liquids, scratches due to dust, electrical discharges when removing the card during operation, etc.) can also damage the card. You can usually detect this if your device does not recognize the SIM card. If you find that your M2M SIM card is defective, contact us via chat for a replacement.

How is the best available network selected ?

Thanks to the support of numerous network operators around the world, HIVEGLOBAL's M2M card provides optimal network coverage. This allows the device to select the best network available at a given location at a given time.

HIVEGLOBAL M2M SIM cards do not have a preferred network provider. Thanks to roaming agreements, we collaborate with various operators. This means that a single SIM card can connect to numerous networks worldwide. In general, several networks are available simultaneously at different device locations.

The device selects the network for the connection. Depending on the settings, this may be the first network found or the one with the strongest signal. Some devices are configured to select only a predefined network. To get the most out of your HIVEGLOBAL card, it is best to configure the device to automatically connect to an available network.

Do HIVEGLOBAL M2M SIM cards favor certain networks?

HIVEGLOBAL M2M SIM cards are exclusively roaming SIM cards.

Our SIM cards connect to supported networks via uncontrolled roaming. This means that no specific network is prioritized. Our SIM cards do not have a home network. All supported network providers are equal. If you find that your SIM card only connects to a limited number of specific networks, please check the following:

1. Is an operator set on the device?

Some devices allow you to explicitly select an operator for network connection. Please check if this is the case. We generally recommend enabling automatic network selection.

2. Are the other available carriers included in your agreed coverage?

Depending on your agreed rate plan, not all carriers may be available in your area. Please check whether other available networks are included in your agreed rate plan.

3. Is the APN configured correctly?

If the APN is not configured correctly on the device, connection to certain specific networks may still be possible. However, to ensure full network coverage, correct APN configuration is essential. You can find the necessary configuration data in this section of our help center, under the appropriate category.
